Strong places don’t just happen,
they’re built with purpose.

Clevedon

Clevedon sits at a crossroads: a rural village with deep roots and a wave of growth pressing in from Auckland’s expansion.

Beyond Usual, working closely with the Clevedon Association, was brought in to help balance those forces – retaining the charm of village life while positioning Clevedon as a destination for visitors and a community of choice for new residents.

Through identity development, narrative framing, and place-based strategy, we worked to protect what locals value most while highlighting the area’s potential for boutique food, markets, and rural tourism.

The work lays the foundation for Clevedon’s growth to be shaped on its own terms, fuelling economic opportunity without losing character.

Franklin

Franklin is a tapestry of towns, each with its own quirks and character, yet too often overlooked as a region. Beyond Usual continues to work alongside Franklin Local Board and economic broker Christina Rogstad to build a unifying identity and give the area control over its own narrative.

Through the Find Your Franklin campaign, a regional magazine, asset library, and website platform, the work is about laying down an economic development framework – helping the region attract investment, talent, and visitors, while giving local communities the recognition and voice they deserve.

Hūnua Traverse

The Hunua Ranges hold one of Auckland’s great untapped assets – a 45km trail stretching from Clevedon to Kaiaua.

Beyond Usual has worked to shape the Hunua Traverse into more than a track, positioning it as a catalyst for regional economic growth. By framing the Traverse as both an outdoor adventure and a connector of communities, we’ve helped shift it from a council project into a place-making opportunity.

The work lays the groundwork for eco-tourism, hospitality, and local business development, giving Franklin a signature experience that attracts visitors while strengthening the identity of the communities along its path.

Pukehoke

Pukekohe faces a major shift: Kiwi Properties is set to develop a shopping complex one and a half times the size of Sylvia Park, right on its doorstep.

Beyond Usual, working with the Pukekohe Business Association, was engaged to prepare the town centre for that challenge. Our task was to position Pukekohe as something a mall could never be – the true High Street of Franklin.

Through identity, narrative, and place-based strategy, we helped the town double down on its advantage as a vibrant, walkable centre where independent businesses thrive. The work is about ensuring Pukekohe competes not by imitation, but by being unmistakably itself.

Franklin Paths and Trails

Franklin’s communities had long called for a stronger network of paths and trails, but the question was how to fund it.

Beyond Usual was engaged by Franklin Local Board to help explain the value of a targeted rate and rally support.

We developed a distinctive ambassador model, recruiting local champions to carry the message and energise the vote. That grassroots approach delivered success, securing the mandate for investment. Since then, we have continued to support Franklin Paths & Trails, refreshing their communications and website so the community stays connected to the progress they themselves helped bring to life.

Waiuku

Waiuku is often bypassed, yet it holds a unique character and a proud steelmaking heritage.

Beyond Usual was engaged by the Waiuku Business Association to create a promotional brand that would help shift attention back to the town and drive traffic its way. Our role was to distil the essence of Waiuku – its industrial strength, coastal charm, and quirky community spirit – into a positioning that locals could rally around.

It’s a long play, designed to give Waiuku both recognition and pride, and to provide a platform the community can bring to life as they shape their own economic future.
